A television is an appliance we usually buy to keep for many years. Unlike how we think about smartphones, a TV can easily last 8 years without becoming too outdated in terms of features.
Many variables come into play when choosing a TV: size, panel technology, resolution, HDR, connectivity, operating system, etc.
Size:
When it comes to screens, size really does matter. After budget, the main factor is size, and it depends on the viewing distance so you don't strain your eyes — though the opposite can also happen, where the size ends up too small for the space where you place your new TV.
According to studies, these are the appropriate ratios between screen size (inches) and viewing distance.
- 32-inch TV: 1.5 to 2.3 meters.
- TV between 40 and 43 inches: 2 to 2.8 meters.
- TV between 46 and 49 inches: 2.4 to 3.2 meters.
- 50-inch TV: 2.5 to 3.3 meters.
- 55-inch TV: 2.8 to 3.6 meters.
- 65-inch TV: between 3.4 and 4.2 meters.
If the TV is going to be wall-mounted or placed higher up, the distance increases and you can go up a few more inches.
LED vs. OLED
In recent years, different panel technologies have emerged capable of delivering all kinds of user experiences. The most common today are LED panels. This technology uses LEDs to backlight an LCD (liquid crystal) panel, which is what provides the color in the image. The more LEDs a panel has, the more zones will achieve optimal lighting, and both contrast and color will be better.
If you want a TV smaller than 55 inches, you won't be able to find one with OLED technology. If you're choosing a screen of 55 inches or larger, you can get an OLED TV. This technology does away with an LCD panel to provide color, and the LEDs themselves do all the work of lighting and coloring the image.
4K resolution is the most recommended option if you're looking for the best value for your money.
It's important to be clear that the goal of HDR is to deliver images with a very wide luminance range — in a TV, this is the ability to produce a set of different brightness levels, influenced by factors like color and brightness. If you're going to use your TV to watch shows and movies, it's better to go with models that have HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, since both standards rely on dynamic metadata to deliver an enhanced experience.
Operating system
As a general entertainment hub, a TV's operating system is the gateway to a range of apps like Netflix, HBO, Amazon Video, YouTube, etc., but not all of them work the same way. So you may run into less intuitive interfaces, missing apps, or lack of updates.
Keeping in mind that a TV is an appliance we replace less often than a phone or computer, it's foreseeable that sooner or later the operating system will fall behind on each provider's updates, so it's advisable to buy an external Smart TV Box.
